Have you ever found it hard to believe that you can heal yourself? Yet you have a feeling there’s more between heaven and earth. Self-healing is an expression of love directed toward yourself.

Have you read about spontaneous remissions and thought it was made up? Yet you might have seen someone recover against all odds after a long drawn illness.

I was one amongst many skeptics who didn’t believe in the phenomenon called self-healing, until I experienced it myself in my early twenties. I went through a critical surgery to remove a blood clot near my left ear that was blocking blood flow to part of my brain. As an after effect of the surgery, the left side of my face became paralyzed.

We consulted several experts who said that it would take a couple of years and persistent therapy for bringing the facial nerves and muscles back to its normal. I was deeply traumatized. One day a teacher of mine came to visit me. He placed his hand on my face with utmost compassion in his eyes and said: you have all it takes to heal yourself.

His words were so influential that it changed my psyche from being a victim to being a healer. This newfound energy was so powerful that even my doctors were surprised with the rate of recovery. In less than a month my face became normal, and there were no traces of it being paralyzed.

Since then I am a strong believer of our ability to heal ourselves and have come across many instances when individuals have been healed miraculously. When I analyze these instances including my own experience of self-healing I can clearly say we human beings are bestowed with unlimited potential to heal ourselves, and also help others to heal.

Self-healing can be a powerful tool of transformation

With a great degree of confidence, I can say that the process of self-healing happens when you embrace these eight essentials for self-healing and put them into practice:

1. Love is the most powerful healing force in the world

It heals not only body, not only the mind, but also the soul. As Indian mystic guru Osho says: if one can love then all one’s wounds disappear. Then one becomes whole – and to be whole is to be holy. The inner most core of one’s being can be healed only through love. And who can love yourself better than YOU! I encourage you to embrace self-love.

2. Focus on being healthy and believe you can heal yourself

I have observed that the majority of people with a disease prefer to focus on their illness and ride on the wave of sympathy they receive from others. Such a negative mindset will drive you away from responding to the treatment that you are being administered. And the psychological state of victimization is the biggest barrier on your journey of self-healing. One of my teachers once told me, ”Remember that you are not your disease – your disease has been ‘created’ by your body and the body can ‘uncreate’ it as well.” It all depends on where you choose to focus. 3. Find compelling reasons as to why you want to heal

Reasoning as to why you want to heal quickly and get back to normalcy acts as an inspiration. When you are inspired to achieve something, you will leave no stone unturned and no obstacle can stop you from achieving your mission. It infuses you with a sense of purpose and allows you to move forward; rather than stay stuck in the how you focus on what you want and why you want it.

4. Listen to your innate intuition

Nobody knows your body better than you and therefore your body is your business and not that of any other person. So it’s essential to listen to and trust your body’s signals and your intuition. It’s the voice of your inner wisdom, and it has the capacity to lead you towards your healing path. Don’t confuse your authentic inner voice with the voice in your head (which is often negative or fear-based). To really tune into your inner guidance, meditation is a valuable tool and even a few minutes here and there is better than nothing at all.

5. Reach to the root cause

In today’s express gratification era we want quick relief. As a result we focus on treating symptoms, rather than killing the root cause. True healing requires that you reach to the root cause. This process requires self-introspection, and thorough analysis of your lifestyle. It also means critical self-assessment is essential and it can be beneficial, and even necessary, to get help from a qualified metaphysician or another type of healer. Furthermore, having someone who shares your positive belief in your corner, and who cares for your well-being is supporting you in your healing journey.

6. Visualization stimulates your self-healing potential

Visualization techniques can help overcome both emotional and physical barriers that may obstruct the healing process. Visualization can be practiced through meditation. When you focus on a positive healthy image of yourself, it helps in shifting your attitude from being a victim to being a healthy and happy person.

7. Positive affirmations expedites the process of healing

Positive affirmations have a miraculous power to make happen what we may think is impossible as they help reprogram our subconscious mind. Louise Hay is considered an authority on this subject and you can find a lot of help and inspiration through her books. I have found the following affirmative statements to have immense healing power.

  • My body always knows how to heal itself.
  • I am healthy and whole and aligned with the wisdom of the universe.
  • I release fear and negativity and know I am safe.
  • I accept all there is here and now. I love every cell of my body.
  • My body tells me what it needs and I am in perfect balance.
  • Every part of my body carries out its task easily and naturally.
  • Joy, ecstasy and bliss are my body’s key characteristics.
  • Gratitude, peace and love flow through my mind and body.

8. Give up attachment to outcomes

Before I started my self-healing journey I couldn’t imagine myself being healed quickly. My focus was on the paralysis and the bleak picture painted by the experts. It wasn’t until my teacher ignited the light of healing within me that the focus changed.

I then realized I had to let go of any attachment to the outcome of my healing journey and accept whatever life had in store for me. I had to let go into healing, trust that miracles can happen, and detach from a mental notion of how things were to happen and even if they were to happen.

These eight essentials of self-healing have played a crucial role in my own journey of physical and emotional healing.
